If you are interested in learning the game of volleyball, then you should take time to learn the volleyball rules. Remember that volleyball is a very fast-paced game. There are even times when a player is given only a split of a second to react to a spiked ball. Thus, it would really help to be familiar with volleyball rules. Actually, you cannot be just familiar with the volleyball rules. You have to know the rules of volleyball inside and out.
But before we get into the basic volleyball rules, you should first know about certain things about the game’s setting and the proper equipment and gear needed to play the game. For starters, let’s go with the indoor volleyball rules. A typical indoor volleyball court should be 18 meters long by 9 meters wide. The attack line that separates the front row from the back row of a particular team should be pegged at 3 meters from the centerline separating both teams. The ball should be at a range of 9 to 10 ounces. Its pressure should be at 4.3 to 4.6 pounds. The net should be at 32 feet by 3 feet. And atop of the net should be canvas that is about 2 inches. This canvas should run the whole length of the net. Now, how high should the net be hoisted from the ground? The net should be hoisted at 2.43 meters for the men, and 2.24 meters for the women.
As for apparel, both male and female players can wear shirts that have either short or long sleeves. There are a lot of players and coaches who prefer long sleeves to short sleeves because of the protection the sleeves offer, especially when players would have to dive for deep balls. The shorts should also be made of fabric that is flexible, to give the players more room for movement.
Now, let’s get into the basic rules of volleyball. To score points, a player has to ground the ball on the opponent’s court. When the opponent commits faults, points are scored as well. To win a set, a team has to reach 25 points. To win a match, the team has to win 2 out of 3 sets. Players cannot come into contact with the ball for more than three times while the ball is on their court. The third and final touch should be directed towards the opponent’s court already. No player can also make consecutive contacts with the ball. If the ball is hit consecutively, it must be through contact with different players.
There are different moves when it comes to volleyball. These are serving, passing, setting, spiking, and blocking. Serving refers to the opening hit from one court to the opponent. A player can perform an underhand serve, an overhead serve, or a jump serve. Passing is that move when you pass the ball from one team member to another. Passing is actually done when preparing the ball for the next move, which is setting. Setting is typically the second contact with the ball, wherein a player prepares the volleyball at a certain height. This is for another player, the spiker, to hit forcibly onto the opponent’s court. The spike is somewhat like a jump serve, save for the follow through motion of the hit, to create a forcible downward motion of the ball. Blocking is that move made by the defensive team, to thwart the incoming spike from the offensive team. But in blocking, you have to make sure that the ball does not land on the foul area of your opponent’s court. Doing so will ensure a successful block and a point on your favor.
