Volleyball Court

The popularity of the game of volleyball has become so intense through the years. It has become so popular that you can see makeshift volleyball courts just about everywhere! But because volleyball is already an Olympic team sport, then one should pay attention to the proper volleyball court dimensions. This way, the game of volleyball would be enhanced just by being able to play on a volleyball court that has the proper dimensions to it.

If you would take a look at a volleyball court diagram, then you would notice for sure that a volleyball court is rectangular in shape. The typical volleyball court measurements are at 18 meters long by 9 meters wide. But a volleyball court is divided into two, for each of the two teams. The net for the volleyball court is the thing that divides the court into two portions. The top of the net should be at 2.43 meters right above the court’s center, for the men’s division. For the women’s, the net should be pegged at 2.24 meters.

Looking at drawings of a volleyball court, you would notice that there is a line that is 3 meters from the net. This line can be seen at both portions of the court, and it runs parallel to the volleyball net. This is actually the line that denotes the attack area of the court. In fact, this line is known as the attack line, so to speak. This is also the line that divides the half of the court into half again. Because of this boundary, there are two areas of the volleyball half-court now, the front area and the back area. And these areas are further divided into three areas. So, there would actually be three players defending the front area, and another three players defending the back area.

The two larger areas of the volleyball court that have been divided by the net are enclosed by an area that is known as the free zone. This free zone is actually at 3 meters wide. Within this free zone of the volleyball court, the players are allowed to enter while the ball is at play after a service has been made.

Now, let us move onto volleyball court rules and regulations. All lines indicative of the team court and the attack zone are within the legal dimensions of the surface area. This means that these are the areas that are part of the court or the zone. During the rally, if the ball lands on any of these boundary lines, then it is considered “in”. But if the ball goes beyond the boundary lines of the volleyball court, then the ball is considered “out”. As for service, antennas are used to indicate whether a service made it inside or outside the court. These antennas are placed at either side of the net. These antennas are then considered to be an extension of the court’s side boundaries. In order for a service to be considered “in”, the ball must pass over the net, of course. And the ball must pass within the two vertical extensions made by the antennas. The ball should not touch any of the two antennas as well. Otherwise, the service would be deemed as a foul.

As for beach volleyball court dimensions, there is a slight difference at hand here. Beach volleyball is played by only two players per team. If the court dimensions of this variation would be similar to that of indoor volleyball, then the two players would have too large a surface area to cover. Thus, there is a need to make the beach volleyball court smaller. So, each half of the court here is pegged at 8 by 8 meters.
