Syracuse Lacrosse

One of the big four universities that dominate NCAA lacrosse, outside lacrosse Syracuse University may be best known as the school where Carmelo Anthony came. Within lacrosse, it’s the school where All-Americans Roy Colsey, Micheal Springer, and Casey Powell used to play.

The Syracuse Lacrosse Athletics team is now recognized as the country’s best star manufacturer. Nestled deep within the ranks of the Syracuse lacrosse team is a cookie cutter where players are molded to become the next champions of the league. And it’s evident in the professional league. As how they would say it, the Major League Lacrosse is already colored orange.

Casey Powell And The Steinfeld Cup

The Syracuse Orangemen are proud as they get prominently represented on the Steinfeld Cup that happened on Rochester for 2007’s NB ZIP Championship Weekend Sunday. Four of the strongest Major League Lacrosse teams played for the Championship Sunday Cup: the Denver Outlaws Los Angeles Riptide Philadelphia Barrage and the Rochester Rattlers, last august 25th and 26th, Saturday and Sunday at the PAETEC Park.

Syracuse Orangemen’s pride was on the four of Rochester Rattler’s lineup: Casey Powell, Scott Ditzell, Jake Plunket and Solomon Bliss. Head coach B.J. O’Hara also has ties to Syracuse Lacrosse, by serving as an assistant coach to the Syracuse University lacrosse team from the season 2002 – 2003. Yet another is Regy Thorpe, who by his college years played major Syracuse lacrosse, serving as a co-captain and winning the Division I National Championship as an Orangeman. Other notable Syracuse lacrosse alumnus that participated on the Weekend Sunday Cup would include Los Angeles Riptide’s Sean Lindsay, and several stars of Philadelphia Barrage, namely Joe Ceglia, Roy Colsey, Michael Springer, and Tim Byrnes.

And Goal!!!

It did come as a surprise when it came to attackmen Roy Colsey and Michael Springer to work as miraculous offensive tandem and capture the Steinfeld Cup. Both superstars have helped propel the Philadelphia Barrage to its 2nd streak in the Major League Lacrosse Championship Sunday at the PAETEC Park. Michael Springer had a wonderful night, contributing three points (1 goal and 2 assists) while the star of the night Roy Colsey sunk two goals to clinch the major league title. Of course, both superstars are themselves Orangemen once, so the game was another testament that Syracuse University is where stars are molded.

Roy Colsey was named that night the MVP, but other players contributed as well. On the Syracuse lacrosse roster, aside from Colsey and Springer, had other hardworking Orangemen, namely Tim Byrnes and Joe Ceglia, who’d also help in propelling the game through the championship. Joe Ceglia had a season high stats of 18 ground balls, an assist in just 12 contests.
