Beach volleyball has indeed caught the fancy of a lot of volleyball players and fans alike. And who wouldn’t be taken by such a sport? Imagine the sun and the wind on your face while watching a thrilling game of volleyball at the beach. Yes, this could very well be the perfect day. Or so you thought, when there comes a sudden downpour that was not included in the weather forecast of your local news channels. Yes, this can indeed happen at times, and there really is no choice but to suspend the game for the time being. And this can be a hassle, especially when there is a pressing tournament at hand. It is precisely because of this that the concept of sand volleyball came into existence.
From the name sand volleyball itself, it is indicative that this is just a variant of beach volleyball. This is because sand or beach volleyball constitute the presence of sand. Thus, it is very obvious that sand volleyball is just a variation of beach volleyball, which in itself is also a variant of indoor volleyball. So, if you would look at it this way, there just might be a chance that for sand volleyball to actually be the indoor form of beach volleyball. And yes, indoor sand volleyball is indeed the concept being laid out here.
With sand volleyball, you now get to bring the beach indoors. And you would not have to worry about sudden changes in the weather patterns. This is because the game is kept perfectly safe indoors. But then, there comes the need of constructing sand volleyball courts. The typical site for a sand volleyball court is actually just your regular indoor basketball court. There really is no need to build another multi-purpose hall for your sand volleyball court. All you have to do is convert your local indoor basketball court into a sand volleyball court, and you’re set to go. This is also pretty easy to do, so there really is not that much of a hassle in this endeavor.
The first thing to do here is to cover the whole gym floor with tarpaulin. This way, you would not have to lay out the sand all over the gym floor. The distribution of the sand would also be controlled better this way. Now that you have the tarpaulin all over the gym floor, it’s time to go through the sand volleyball court measurements. The dimensions of an indoor volleyball court is actually 29’-6” wide by 59’-0” long. Now, you would have to add 10’ more to each of these dimensions, to indicate the boundaries of the court. Thus, the overall sand volleyball court dimensions would be 49’-6” wide by 79’-0” long. These dimensions would constitute the whole playing area for the court.
With the dimensions done, let’s go over the basic sand volleyball rules. The usually sand volleyball match is actually won with a best 2 out of 3 games. The game is deemed over when one of the teams is able to score 15 points already. The winning team must have an advantage of two points over the losing team. In the event that both teams are at a 14-14 status, then play should continue until a 2-point advantage is established. But there is actually a 1-hour time limit for each game to be won. If the teams are still tied when the 1-hour limit expires, the next point to be won would render that team the winning point. Plus, the serving team alone has the power to score points. As for service, players can choose to perform underhand serves, overhand serves, or even jump serves. Faults occur when the ball touches the net, or hits a teammate of the server. A fault also occurs if the ball does not pass over the net, or the ball goes out of the court’s boundaries.
