How To Play Volleyball

If you are into watching the fast-paced game of volleyball, then you just might be itching to learn how to play volleyball. The game has become so popular all over the world that a lot of people have indeed gone on about how they want to learn how to play volleyball. So, what are the things you need to do to learn how to play volleyball?

These are just simple things actually. For anyone to know how to play volleyball, you should know the basics of the game first. One of the first things you should know about the game are the dimensions of the court itself. You have to know the court, your space, so to speak. This way, when you are getting into the skills part of the game, you will have already familiarized yourself with the dimensions of the court. The typical volleyball court is actually 18 meters long by 9 meters wide. And this court is divided into two by the volleyball net. The halves are then subdivided into two, constituting the front and back areas. And each of these areas is then divided into 6 portions. These are then the 6 portions that the 6 volleyball players are going to be responsible for, in terms of defense.

Now that we have the dimensions out, let’s proceed to the apparel. Whatever you’re most comfortable in, whether you go for long sleeve shirts or the short sleeve kind is okay. What’s important here is your comfort when playing the game. But when it comes to shoes, then you should make sure to use the appropriate volleyball shoes. These shoes actually have a unique design that is specially made for volleyball players. The forefoot portion of the shoe is actually bigger than that of your ordinary shoe. This is to give your feet, specifically your toes, more leverage when jumping for a spike shot. Thus, volleyball shoes are strongly recommended here. It is also recommended for volleyball players to wear protective gear, such as kneepads and elbow pads. Kneepads are indeed a necessity, because volleyball would be requiring players to dive to the ground for spiked balls and such. Thus, kneepads would be the ideal protective gear here. Elbow pads are not really that needed. But if you want to buy a pair of your own, then by all means, do. There is no such thing as too much safety when it comes to volleyball.

So, how do you play volleyball? For any person to learn to play volleyball, you should first be wary of the proper hand positions. There are actually two positions that you can choose from. The first is the wrapped fist hand position. What you do here is you make a fist of your hand. You then wrap that fist with your other hand. The other hand position is the cupped palm position. You bring both of your hands close in a cupping position. After which, you place your thumbs over your palms, thus staying at the top of your hands.

There are also alternatives when doing the service. The simplest is the underhand serve. Typically, you would be facing the opposite end of the court sideways. You then throw the ball, and then hit its underside towards your opponent’s side. The overhead is a more competitive form of service. You face the court upfront and throw the ball up high. You then hit the ball with your hand from an overhead position, more like you’re spiking the ball. Only, with the overhand service, you do not engage in a follow through motion, so as not to direct the ball downwards.

Setting is another important skill to the game. This is actually the guiding hit for the offensive team. The setter places the ball strategically for either of the spiker to hit towards the opponent. And if a ball is properly set, there’s just no telling how the spiked ball would finish.
